Research Shows Benefits of Acupuncture for Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common condition affecting joint cartilage, especially in the knee and hip. Around 10% of over 55's suffer with it. Research shows that traditional acupuncture can be an effective intervention for this condition.

Traditional acupuncture is a holistic treatment where single-use, ultra-fine needles are interred into specific points on the body to correct imbalances in the qi, or vital energy, that give rise to symptoms like pain.

The British Acupuncture Council discusses on its website the research available for osteoarthritis and cites systematic reviews showing how acupuncture is statistically superior to sham acupuncture, http://www.acupuncture.org.uk/a-to-z-of-conditions/osteoarthritis.html.

Last year, a team at York University published a study that compared acupuncture with other physical interventions. It showed acupuncture can be considered one of the more effective interventions for pain associated  with osteoarthritis of the knee.
